It's been an exciting time for Hilary Duff. ICYMI, the Younger actress basically broke the internet with her recent nude photoshoot for the cover of Women's Health. While her physique was on display for the shoot, it was hard to ignore the 34-year-old's glowing and seemingly flawless complexion in the photos.
In honor of her partnership with Walgreen's for Red Nose Day, a campaign dedicated to raising money for children in need of health, education, and food resources, Hilary Duff spoke to Shape and shared a sneak peek at her current skin-care favorites.
"I have not had a facial in three years. Three years!" she admits over the phone. When it comes to maintaining a clear and glowing complexion, it's all about exfoliation, Duff explains. "I exfoliate three times a week with Dr. Lancer The Method Polish (Buy It, $68, dermstore.com). "It's this super aggressive, abrasive, sandy exfoliant, and I do it dry, so with no water," she says. "So, it's actually kind of rough, and I'm pink afterward, but I think that's what's helped my skin be okay without having facials."
The Dr. Lancer The Method Polish is a face scrub infused with antioxidants (pumpkin and pomegranate enzymes) and natural minerals, such as magnesium, sodium, and quartz crystals. It helps slough away dead surface skin cells to improve the look of the skin's tone and texture. (Related: The Best Face Scrubs to Achieve Bright, Smooth Skin)
While the polish is a staple in Duff's routine, she admits that her regimen changes frequently, because she likes to try new products and doesn't have sensitive skin. "I don't tend to stick to something for super long. I like to change it up," she says. "But when I use a skin-care line, I try to use at least three products from that line and use them how they're meant to be used." Currently, the actress is using products from Joanna Vargas, the celebrity esthetician and facialist behind her eponymous skin-care brand. "I've been using her line a lot," Duff says.
As far as the products Duff is using right now? She "loves" the Joanna Vargas Rejuvenating Serum (Buy It, $100, dermstore.com), which is an anti-aging serum made with antioxidants and argan oil. It protects against environmental aggressors (aka free radical damage) while hydrating and softening the skin. (Related: What Does Serum Do, Exactly?)
Duff is also using the Joanna Vargas Supernova Serum (Buy It, $295, dermstore.com), a retinol serum that reduces the appearance of fine lines, dark spots, dullness, and large pores. Retinol is a new ingredient to Duff's routine and has been a huge game-changer for her complexion, she says. "I actually just started using retinol, which is crazy," Duff admits. "I don't understand. I'm 34, and no one told me to be on retinol? What's going on?" she jokes. (Psst: Everything You Need to Know About Retinol and Its Skin-Care Benefits)
She uses retinol two to three times a week to help with fine lines, wrinkles, and melasma, a skin condition that causes spots and patches leading to an uneven skin tone. "I have melasma from my last pregnancy. Thank you, Mae," she jokes, explaining how the ingredient has helped with this skin issue. "It's kind of like this little miracle drug for your skin."
Finally, Duff rounds out her routine with a moisturizer from Joanna Vargas, an eye cream, and "tons of sunscreen," she says. While the Lizzie McGuire alum's skin-care routine may be a bit of a splurge, there's no denying it seems to be working for her skin. Have you seen her glow?!
